We’re Having Twins!
Multiples run on both sides of our family. Every generation on my mum’s side has had twins or triplets, and my father-in-law is also a twin.
Growing up, I was one of four, and my brother and sister are twins. I always had a feeling I would have twins myself. In fact, I used to tease my husband (then boyfriend) that we were destined for twins. Whenever I saw someone pushing a twin pram, I’d elbow him and say, “That’s going to be us one day!” He’d just laugh and roll his eyes.
Despite all that, I was still shocked when we found out we were having twins!
I had severe stage 4 endometriosis and had surgery a few years prior. So, once the doctor confirmed I was pregnant, she added that I would need an ultrasound to ensure the pregnancy was viable.
At the ultrasound, I was just there (in my mind) to find out if I could continue with the pregnancy. That’s all I was prepared for. In fact, I hadn't even attached to the idea yet because it was all so new and up in the air.
“Everything is fine, and you’re having twins,” announced the sonographer in one monotone breath. She tidied up and then walked out.
WHAT?! We’d just received two major pieces of joyous information juxtaposed by the most bizarrely unjoyous delivery.
In a perfect world, I would’ve liked that announcement to have gone something like this:
"Everything is fine!"
* PAUSE *
Hubby and I celebrate that news...
"And, you're having twins!"
Hubby and I celebrate that news...
It didn’t though, so we were left shocked with not only the double (pun intended) whammy of news but the delivery of it.
We walked out like stunned mullets and remained silent the whole way home.
We’re having twins!
